A Calabar-based pastor’s wife, identified as Mrs. Unyime Bassey, has been reported to the Nigeria Police Force following a distressing social media report by Ukorebi Esien detailing the consistent physical abuse of a seven-year-old child nanny named Edidiong.
The incident, which reportedly took place at 8 Stream Road, off Atimbo in the Calabar Municipality, gained public attention after Esien shared a video of the young girl’s injuries. According to the report, the child was allegedly “beaten to a pulp” by Mrs. Bassey after being accused of stealing meat from a pot of soup.
Details of the Allegations
The post by Ukorebi Esien highlights a disturbing pattern of treatment within the household. While all four of Mrs. Bassey’s biological children are enrolled in school, Edidiong—who is the same age as the family’s youngest child—is kept at home to run errands and act as a nanny.
Neighbors cited in the report claim that the violence captured in the recent video is “mild” compared to previous assaults the young girl has endured. The situation has caused significant outcry, particularly as both Mrs. Bassey and her husband are practicing pastors in the community.
Formal Action and Calls for Intervention
The case has been formally brought to the attention of the Nigeria Police Force, Airport Division. In his report, Ukorebi Esien called upon human rights activists, specifically naming James Ibor and the Basic Rights Counsel, to intervene and ensure that justice is served for the young victim.
