The Vatican has released initial images of Pope Francis lying in state. The photographs depict Pope Francis within an open wooden casket, dressed in red vestments, a bishop’s miter, and with a rosary in his hands. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state, is shown offering prayers. These images were taken inside the private chapel of the Casa Santa Marta, the Pope’s Vatican residence, where he passed away on Monday at the age of 88.
