Gospel artiste Mera Owili has issued a public statement titled “Setting the Record Straight” to address the ongoing controversy surrounding the ownership of the popular “Tamuno” chorus.
Owili acknowledged that she has known and sung “Tamuno” for many years and that a video of him ministering the song on January 1st at an event in Nembe, Bayelsa State, gained publicity. She clarified that she never claimed to be the original writer of the chorus.
Upon being contacted by another artiste who insisted he was the original composer, Owili states she initially responded gracefully and even made a video asking people to support the individual, while clearly stating he did not take credit as the original writer.
However, following further research, Owili discovered that the “Tamuno” chorus is actually an old Ijaw folk song of praise, a heritage song passed down through generations. She asserts that it belongs to the collective musical identity of the Ijaw people, and therefore, no single individual alive can rightfully claim to have written it.Owili emphasized that every other version heard today is “simply an interpretation of that ancient timeless original”. He concluded by expressing gratitude for the honor of reinterpreting this “sound of thanksgiving” and for how God is using the song to bless lives globally.
