Benue Governor Alia Refutes “Christian Genocide” Claims in Nigeria

Makurdi, Benue State – Benue State Governor Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia has publicly rejected the assertion that there is a “Christian genocide” occurring in Nigeria, stating that while the nation faces significant security challenges, the conflict is not defined by religious or ethnic cleansing.

Governor Alia, who is also an ordained Catholic priest, made the statement while speaking at a public event.

“I am a Reverend Father, and I am working with the fear of God. In Benue State, we do not have any religious, ethnic, racial, national, or state genocide. We have insecurity but not a genocide,” Governor Alia stated.

His comments come amid heightened international tension and debate over the nature of attacks in Nigeria, which led President Donald Trump to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged Christian persecution.

The Governor’s stance aligns with that of the Federal Government of Nigeria, which has also previously rejected the foreign designation, arguing that the nation’s insecurity affects both Christian and Muslim communities and does not constitute systematic genocide.
