Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has launched a defamation lawsuit against social media commentator Martins Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, stemming from accusations made in February regarding alleged financial impropriety and contract breaches with her former record label, EeZee Tee. According to the lawsuit, dated March 3rd and filed by Chinwo’s lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, VeryDarkMan’s comments, disseminated through his social media platforms to millions of followers, are deemed “libellous, malicious, and damaging” to Chinwo’s reputation.
The core of the dispute revolves around VeryDarkMan’s claims that Chinwo diverted funds from shows without compensating her former record label, owned by Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, and that she violated her contract before departing from the label. Olajengbesi argues that VeryDarkMan, who had no direct involvement in the dispute between Chinwo and EeZee Tee, falsely presented the matter in a manner that significantly tarnished the singer’s image.

The lawsuit further alleges that VeryDarkMan posted several videos that offered a “caricaturist and disdainful portrayal of the Claimant (Chinwo)” while appearing to favor EeZee Tee’s side of the dispute, actions Olajengbesi contends were deliberately intended to ridicule Chinwo.
According to the court filing, Chinwo “neither had any form of relationship with the Defendant nor was the Defendant involved in the issue between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T in any material particular,” and VeryDarkMan’s remarks were not only untrue but also “damning and injurious” to Chinwo’s reputation and public image. Given the seriousness of the claimed defamation and the effect it had on Chinwo’s reputation and career, the complaint asks for hefty damages.
