Warri Catholic Diocese Suspends Priest for Allegedly Marrying Secretly in the United States

The Catholic Diocese of Warri in Delta State has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from priestly duties following his alleged marriage in the United States.

In a statement titled “Decree of Suspension” dated January 16, 2025, and signed by Bishop of Warri, Rt. Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, and the Chancellor/Notary, Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, the Diocese revealed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe entered into marriage with Ms. Dora Chichah on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA.

The Diocese cited Canon 1394 §1 as the basis for the suspension, stating that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension by entering into marriage. The Diocese also revealed that Fr. Oghenerukevwe had requested on November 30, 2024, to be released from his priestly obligations. However, the Diocese said it had initiated the process but the priest proceeded with the marriage without completing the required procedures.

The suspension prohibits Fr. Oghenerukevwe from presenting himself as a priest.

The Diocese clarified that the suspension is immediate and has full canonical weight (cf. Canon 1333). However, Fr. Oghenerukevwe retains the right to petition for a reversal or modification of the decree. This appeal process, however, requires a sincere commitment to reform and a willingness to reconcile with Church teachings
