Key Verse
“And the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shall come forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and he shall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given into his hand” (Daniel 11:11).
TEXT — Daniel11:1-12
Message
History had it that three great kingdoms once existed. The first was the Babylonian kingdom presided over by Nebuchadnezzar. This was followed by the Medo-Persian kingdom. After this came the Grecian kingdom. Alexander the Great of Greece was very prominent in the Grecian empire. After his death, his kingdom was divided into four parts with the southern part led by Ptolemy who became the strongest of them.
However, this king had alliance with the king of the North, Antiochus II, who married Ptolemy’s daughter called Berenice. This alliance and union in marriage was short-lived following the death of Ptolemy and the subsequent divorce of Berenice by Antiochus II. This unfaithfulness and breach of trust led to chaos in the Northern kingdom and insurrections after insurrection ensued.
The vision that Daniel had in the first year of the reign of Darius, the king of Media and Persia, was graphic and its fulfilment was precise (Daniel 11:1-10). The summary of these wars, alliances and treacheries reveal the moral and spiritual decadence in fallen man. Apostle James, in the fourth chapter of his general epistle, asked this all-important question: “From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?” (James 4:1). Turbulence in the heart of unregenerate man, greed, avarice and carnality are responsible for most conflicts and wars recorded in human history.
Only truly regenerated persons whose hearts and consciences have been purged by the blood of Jesus can be free from the aggressive tendencies of the fallen human nature.
Thought for the day
