Husband of Late Gospel Singer Osinachi Nwachukwu Receives Death Sentence

In a significant legal development today, April 28th, Justice Nwosu-Iheme of an FCT High Court Wuse Zone 2 in Abuja delivered a verdict sentencing Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of the late celebrated gospel singer Osinachi, to death by hanging.

This judgment came after the court found Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide, establishing that his actions led to the untimely death of the singer on April 8, 2022.

The prosecution successfully proved its case, leading to the guilty verdict on this primary charge. Nwachukwu was initially arraigned on June 3, 2022, facing a 23-count charge brought by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, which included culpable homicide, criminal intimidation, cruelty to children, spousal battery, and other related offenses.

Throughout the trial, the prosecution presented compelling evidence through seventeen witnesses, including two of Osinachi’s children, and submitted twenty-five documents as exhibits.

In his defense, Nwachukwu testified and called four additional witnesses, tendering four exhibits. Before the sentencing, his counsel pleaded for leniency, while the prosecution urged the court to uphold the law.

Ultimately, Justice Nwosu-Iheme handed down the death sentence on the count of culpable homicide, alongside varying jail terms for other counts, including two years imprisonment each on Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18, a six-month sentence on Count 10, a three-year sentence on Count 11, and fines of N500,000 and N200,000 on Counts 6 and 7 respectively.
